Best Day Trips Outside the City By DoN.Y.C

Take A Day Trip Outside NYC

Storm King Art Center

1 MUSEUM ROAD | NEW WINDSOR, NY
If larger than life works of art and the promise of an Instagram-worthy nature walk just an hour's distance from the city sound like your idea of fun, Storm King Art Center is your one stop shop. The good news is, the park is free and open to the public for the season on April 4th. Ride with the top down and take a leap of faith planning a more adventurous date — It'll be worth it.

Lake Skenonto Circular

HARRIMAN STATE PARK | NEW YORK, NY
Sick of the city and the daunting L train commutes? The greatest appeal of Lake Skenonto and the surrounding trails of Harriman State Park is the secluded experience you'll share with nature as opposed to congested city sidewalks. The best of both worlds is as simple as renting an SUV large enough to bring a crew along, pack the essentials for a scenic lakeside lunch and take in the fresh air. With 200 miles of trails, making a day of it is as simple as starting the ignition.

The Adirondack Mountains

4468 STATE ROUTE 3 | SARANAC LAKE, NY
For 60 million NY residents the vast 30,000 mile expansion making up The Adirondacks lies only six hours away. This is a Jeep type of trip upstate, with the shifts in terrain as you leave behind the city for a more rugged road trip. Stop at The Chuck Wagon, a classic pitstop for road food before rolling up your sleeves and getting nautical for a night of island camping. Pro tip: This is a bucket list adventure, so make plans in advance to secure your private camp space for only $22.

Niagara Falls

332 PROSPECT ST. | NIAGARA FALLS, NY
One of the world's most astonishing natural wonders, the Niagara Falls straddles the border between the state of New York and the Canadian province Ontario. A seven hour drive from the city, the combination of height and volume of the three waterfalls is what makes Niagara Falls one of the most breathtaking natural adventures, with a total hight of 167 feet and more than six million cubic feet of water going over the crest  of the falls every minute.

Camp Smith Trail

28 BEAR MOUNTAIN BRIDGE RD | CORTLANDT, NY
Hop on the Metro-North Hudson line to Peekskill Station and free shuttles are available to Bear Mountain Inn and you can access Camp Smith Trail just behind the Bear Mountain Toll House. The intermediate trail is a little over 4 miles and can be strenuous at times, but luckily you can bring emotional support in the form of your dog, as long as they're kept on the leash.

Breakneck Ridge

DUTCHESS CO. | NEW YORK
While Breakneck Ridge is accessible via the Metro North, you'll get the most out of your trip if you make the trip by car where no transit stops will limit your exploration. This hike  3 miles long but it’s strenuous and rewarding - especially when you reach the Cold Springs 2 miles in. Be prepared to get physical; the hike is largely uphill and gets extremely steep. The views totally make up for all the physical exertion and we suggest you make time for Fiddlesticks, a local gem serving up one of the most delicious Sunday brunches we've ever feasted on.

Rehoboth Beach

REHOBOTH BEACH | DELAWARE
Stop talking about that trip to Mexico you haven't gotten around to since first moving to the city. Cheat on your destination dreams and drive with the top down until you hit Rehoboth Beach - known for having a stunningly gorgeous shore line and being easily accessible by car. After 200 miles of convertible cruising, you'll be more than ready to hit the bustling beachside boardwalk for some grub. Wash down your food by taking a tour of the famous Dogfish Head Brewery.
